2022 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge
Bringing Classic Porsche Models Back to Life with the Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge

As the home of more Porsche classic models than anywhere else in the world, the US will be the location of some intense competition for the 2022 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge. Porsche Oklahoma City is one of the participating dealers in this competition.
The Classic Restoration
US Porsche dealerships can acquire a vehicle that requires some extra attention to get it road-worthy again. Some of these models may need a tune-up and cleanup, while others may need more of an overhaul. You’ll find everything from the classic Porsche 911 models to the first-generation Cayenne. Models in the competition may be from 1956 forward, including five generations of the legendary 911.
Restoration is done by technicians who have been trained on Porsche technology and design to ensure only the best results. These technicians have access to over 60,000 Porsche Classic genuine parts to rebuild and restore their chosen model.
The Challenge runs through July when a panel of experts will review the models in the competition. These judges consider restoration, including the engine and the interior. They also look at the documentation, such as the Classic Technical Certificate. Three winners are chosen: one from Area East, one from Area West, and a third from Area South/Central.
2021 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge Winners
The previous year’s Area West winner was a 1989 Porsche 911 Targa G-Model. It was restored from the engine all the way out with improved performance and aesthetics. The engine had over 117,000 miles on it, which was evidenced by the fact that every part of the vehicle needed some kind of TLC. The suspension and braking systems didn’t work well, and the cabin was a mess with torn seat covers and worn carpet. The exterior had rust and damage to the front bumper, among other issues. Once the work was completed, it was a whole new vehicle inside the classic model.
For the Area East, the model to take top honors was the 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Type 964. The vehicle required a complete makeover from the mechanics, right down to the carpet. The paint had been significantly damaged and required a complete respray job. New Porsche technology brings the classic into the 21st century. The cabin was updated using features from various generations. The exterior also had a major update with new glass, headlights, taillights, and handles.
The Area South/Central also had a Porsche 911 as the winner. This model required less restoration, but a new leather roof and new side mirrors had the third-generation 911 looking sharp. The 911 was a Carrera 4 Targa, which was one of only 169 of these models made in the US. The vehicle had less than 30,000 miles, but it still needed a complete rebuild of the engine and a battery replacement.
With all the effort that went into restoring these classic models, it will be exciting to see what the dealerships produce for the 2022 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge. To learn more about classic Porsche models, call or visit Porsche Oklahoma City near Midwest City, Tulsa, and Bentonville.
